PLANT DESCRIPTION
An erect, much branched perennial shrub, growing up to a height 2 meters. Leaves are simple, ovate to oblong, 6-14 cm in length and acute. Flowers are racemes, terminal or axillary, 5-15 cm long, composed of numerous, thin, rounded or kidney-shaped bracts, about 2 cm long, enclosing the fasciles or dwarfed cymes of small flowers. Pods are swollen, oblong, 1 cm long, containing 2 seeds.
MEDICINAL PROPERTIES
Plant pacifies vitiated pitta, inflammation, arthritis, worm infestation, leaf decoction is used for postpartum bath, and root decoction is a remedy of Cough and blood spitting, and epilepsy. Filipinos utilize the dried bracts for stuffing pillows and cushions. This plant is mistakenly taken as sthira (Desmodium gangeticum), or as a substitute in various parts of India.
CHEMICAL CONTENTS
After fractionation of the methanol (MeOH) extract with dichloromethane (DCM) and n-butanol (BuOH); five flavonoids were identified as 7-methoxy, 5, 4'-dihydroxy coumestan (1), 8, 3'-diprenyl-5, 7, 4'-trihydroxy flavanone (2), 5, 7, 4'-trihydroxy isoflavone (3), 5, 7, 2', 4'-tetrahydroxy isoflavone (4) and 5, 4'-dihydroxy isoflavone 7-O-glucoside
