PLANT DESCRIPTION
A medium sized perennial herb grows up to 3 m hight. Stem solid, fleshy, clothed with membranous leaf sheaths: leaves radical. 45 cm long, shiny, coriaceous with pinnatified segments and channeled petiole; flowers 10-20 in the main and 5-6 in the partial umbels; fruits flat thin, reddish brown.
The resin which exudes from the cut surface is the commercial form of asafoetida.
MEDICINAL PROPERTIES
Plant pacifies vitiated kapha, vata, flatulence, colic, dyspepsia, asthma, hysteria, constipation, chronic bronchitis, whooping cough, epilepsy, mental diseases and liver diseases.
Useful part : Dried resin.
