Distribution – Throughout India cultivated in gardens and in temples.
PLANT DESCRIPTION
A fleshy perennial shrub grows up to 0.5 meter in height. Stems jointed, globose, flattened, mostly leafless, and laterally flattened resembling leaves. Leaves alternate, flat, vestigial, or entirely absent. Flowers always arising from cushion like, axillary areoles (modified short shoots). Flowers whitish, solitary, rarely clustered bisexual, rarely unisexual, actinomorphic or occasionally zygomorphic and very fragrant Fruit juicy, naked, and scaly. Seeds usually numerous, often arillate.
MEDICINAL PROPERTIES
Plant pacifies vitiated vata, pitta, cough, bronchitis, cardiac debility, fracture, urinary retention, Reynaud's disease and kidney disease. This plant is considered as sacred as per Hindu culture.
