Distribution – Throughout India growing wild in Kerala, and Burma.
PLANT DESCRIPTION
A large perennial palm tree grows up to 45 meters in height. Leaves simple, very large, clustered in the upper part only with large petiole, armed with sharp blades on borders, leaf sheath palmate, with several deep lobes. Stem is very broad about 0.7-1 meter in diameter. Tree blossom once in lifetime, and then perishes. Flowers greenish, with fetid smell, seen in the large terminal panicles. Fruits globose drupes, enclosing very hard seed.
MEDICINAL PROPERTIES
Plant pacifies vitiated pitta, burning sensation, hemorrhoids, peptic ulcer, gastritis, hyper perspiration, and skin diseases. Starchy material obtained from the stem is used as staple food in some parts of Kerala.
