PLANT DESCRIPTION
A small perennial deciduous armed shrub grows over bushes and hedges. Leaves simple, opposite, ovate or trilobed or irregularly lobed, long petiolate and pubescent. Flowers purplish-blue, in cymes. Berry globose, red or scarlet.
MEDICINAL PROPERTIES
Plant pacifies vitiated pitta, kapha, cough, bronchitis, dyspnoea, anorexia, worm infestation, skin diseases, hemeplegia, edema, urinary calculi, amenorrhea, and urinary tract disorders

CHEMICAL CONTENTS
The steroidal alkaloid, solasodine, is present in fruit and leaf of the plant (air-dried fruits and leaves fromCoimbatore gave 0.96 and 0.36% respectively). A crude glycoalkaloid mixture, isolated from the plant material, contained about 20% beta-solamarine. The plant exhibited antimitotic, antitumour, antibacterial and antifungal activities and showed promising results in two cancer test systems—K B cell and sarcoma in mice.
